TX11: Software, Modeling, Simulation, and Information Processing

Taxonomy Category Summary

This taxonomy category is divided into six areas: software development, engineering, and integrity, modeling, simulation, information processing, mission architecture, systems analysis and concept development, and ground computing. Software development, engineering, and integrity covers technologies for the design, development, testing, verification and cybersecurity of software systems. Modeling supports autonomous integrated and interoperable modeling capabilities throughout NASA’s mission portfolio. This focuses on software modeling and model checking, and integrated hardware and software, human performance, and science modeling. Simulation technology provides Star Formation, Stellar Jets, Laboratory Astrophysics, Telescopes, Astronomy, Nebulae, Objects in the Night Sky Engineering data and insight into the level of risk across the entire lifecycle of NASA’s distributed heterogeneous, and long-lived mission systems. This technology focuses on distributed simulation, integrated system life cycle simulation, model-based systems engineering, simulation-based training and decision support systems, exascale simulation, uncertainty quantification and nondeterministic simulation methods, and multiscale, multiphysics, and multi fidelity simulation. Information processing covers technologies for triaging data with intelligent onboard algorithms and thoroughly analyzing data using ground based systems. It focuses on science, engineering, and mission data life cycle technologies, intelligent data understanding, using natural language processing to combine different data sets for new insights, collaborative science and engineering, cyber infrastructure and security, digital assistant (e.g. pilot assist or advisor), and edge computing. Mission architecture, systems analysis, and concept development covers technologies to support the definition of mission architectures, performing system analysis and vehicle or concept development activities. Ground computing covers advanced computing and data storage technologies for big data analysis and high-fidelity physics-based simulations. This covers technology such as exascale supercomputers, automated exascale software development toolsets, exascale supercomputer file systems, quantum computers, public cloud supercomputers, cognitive computers, high performance data analysis platforms, and cloud computing.
