What Does it Really Take to Keep Someone Healthy in Space

Astronauts eat healthy, so why is a robust human health and performance program important? In this talk, we look behind the scenes at what it really takes to keep an astronaut healthy in space, by examining the operational aspects of space medicine that begin years before an astronaut boards a spacecraft. While the flight surgeon is the focal point for ensuring astronaut health, they are supported by a team of scientists, engineers, allied health professionals, and training specialists, each of whom play a vital role in the crew's health care. We discuss some of the unique operational aspects and challenges.

Reading the Martian Record: Stories of a Previously Habitable World

In 2012, The Mars Science Laboratory sent the rover Curiosity to Mars where it discovered sedementary rocks that suggest Mars, like Earth, once had water. Kirsten Siebach describes to us the observations that Curiosity made and tells us a story of what life would have looked like if it had indeed thrived there.
