The Rice Space Institute is composed of groups specializing in:

Space Astrophysics Astrophysics and Astronomy: Group leaders: Edison Liang (Astrophysics) and Ian Smith (Astronomy)

Space Technology Technology: Group leaders: Carter Kittrell (instrumentation), and Pol Spanos (engineering)

Space History and Public Policy: Group leaders: Thomas Williams (History) and George Abbey

(Other members of the RSI have expertise in Space-based Earth Science and Space Bioengineering, but these are focus areas of other Rice institutes: EESI in Earth Systems and IBB in Biosciences)
